Genetic Testing (Pharmacogenetic Testing)---all ages
This test can be helpful in selected cases. It is NOT diagnostic. It is useful only if the correct diagnosis has been made by an accurate Psychiatric Evaluation.
This test can help in the following ways:
-Look for possible side effects that may occur with particular medications
-Examine how fast or slow you may metabolize certain groups of medications which may help with proper dosing
-Check to see if you could benefit from Complimentary Treatments such as L-Methylfolate (Deplin), High dose Fish Oil, or Exercise
-It may warn if you are at an increased risk of opioid addiction, and tell if certain medications may help in alcohol abuse
-It also includes a panel that may help if you need treatment for acute pain in the future
-more testing panels are being added as technology progresses
The cost when using your Health Insurance or Medicare Advantage Plan, is a maximum out of pocket cost of $325 to Genomind for the test (No cost if you have Medicare A & B, or an AHCCCS plan). UnitedHealthcare requires a Prior Authorization (additional Administrative cost), and a limited gene panel. Self Pay for the test is $2000. My Office Practice is Private Pay and there is a charge of $75 for interpretation.
Again, it cannot be stressed that this test is useful only if a proper diagnosis has been made by a detailed Psychiatric Evaluation. The most common mistake I see is when a patient has been misdiagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, when they actually have a form of Bipolar Disorder. It does not matter what the test results show, a long-lasting positive result from an Antidepressant will never be obtained.
